On our terrace at Tertre square, in our dining room or in the garden, we invite you to savour meals of French tradition, cooked with passion by our Chef. Let yourself be seduced by our Onion soup or by our Mussels, unless you are more tempted by our Frog legs or by our home made Duck Lever. For dessert, you should taste our Upside down Apple Pie or our home made Puff Pastry filled with Ice-cream. In order to accompany those gourmet dishes, a great selection of wines is at your disposal to the delight of your taste buds.
La Mère Catherine was part of several events that left their mark on the history of Paris. Our restaurant has kept all the character of an establishment with a rich and memorable past.
Founded in 1793 by Catherine Lemoine, this place was used as a presbytery by the priest of Saint-Pierre de Montmartre church, dating back to the XVth Century. Danton also met his disciples there, during the French Revolution.
This Restaurant also faced the battle of Paris on March 30th 1814, which marked the end of military operations of the French Campaign and the collapse of the Napoleonic Empire. During the Napoleonian conflicts, the invading Cossacks slipped off to have a drink at “La Mère Catherine” but, having no permission of their senior officers, they exclaimed “Bistro! Bistro!” (Hurry! Hurry!), expression that gave its name to the current French “bistrots”.
During the 50s, La Mère Catherine was the most popular and one of the most renowned restaurants in Paris and became an obligatory stop for tourists and an appealing place for Parisian people. Today, La Mère Catherine has not lost its charm and has managed to preserve a decor that is respectful of its history, while the comfort of its guests is continuously improved.
